ICAO’s Activities on International Aviation and Climate Change

Abstract

ICAO’s work on establishing global guidance, policies, standards, and regulations on aviation environmental matters spans four decades and environmental protection remains one of the organization’s strategic objectives.  An overview of ICAO’s current activities related to addressing the effects of civil aviation on the global climate will be presented.  The ICAO Programme of Action on International Aviation and Climate Change, current forecasts of aviation traffic and fuel consumption, and UN-wide initiatives for addressing climate change will be discussed.  With a view toward the future, the role of alternative fuels for aviation and ICAO’s planned near-term efforts on environmental protection will be highlighted.
